He told them plainly.  And certainly they couldn’t have missed it.

He got up.  Washed their feet.  And said, “Now that I, your Lord, and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should one another’s feet.  I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you” (v. 14).

It’s kind of obvious I think even at the time.  Jesus was modeling servanthood.  He was asking his disciples to do the same.

There.

But not really.

Jesus had said to them, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand” (v. 7).

They might have thought they got it.  But they didn’t.

I might think I get it.  But probably not.

Sometimes God is doing much more than we understand.

And sometimes we he does a lot of things where we’ll only really understand, “Later.”
