I think one of the most sacred times in a person’s life is when they are dying and passing on their final words to their friends and family.  It is what makes the final words of Jesus’ so powerful and holy – “Forgive them for they know now what they do” (Lk 23:34).

Here were David’s final words to his son who would rule Israel:

I am going the way of all the earth.  Be strong and be courageous like a man, and keep your obligation to the LORD your God to walk in His ways and to keep His statues, commands, ordinances, and decrees.  This is written in the law of Moses, so that you will have success in everything you do and wherever you turn…” (1 Kings 2:2-4).

As I get older the ways of God resonate at deeper and deeper levels.  You see that those who have hung on and followed the Lord all the days of their lives do have a more peaceful, richer life.  Those who have not have often a mess of their lives, even if they are wildly “successful.”

Hold fast to His ways.  It matters not just to you but for those who follow in your footsteps.
