Dear ones, stop reading Harry Potter or anything like it.  We are in a day and time when if it is written interestingly and well, people will absorb it.  Because “they know what is truth and not.”  Or if it has great production value and is entertaining, they will watch naked people in a survivor show or drag.

Dear ones, don’t do this.  You cannot participate in those things and it not affect your spirit.  This are “detestable” to the Lord.

When you enter the land the Lord your God is giving you, do not imitate the detestable customs of those nations.  No one among you is to make his son or daughter pass through the fire, practice divination, tell fortunes, interpret omens, practice sorcery,  cast spells, consult a medium or a familiar spirit, or inquire of the dead.  Everyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord, and the Lord your God is driving out the nations before you because of these detestable things.  You must be blameless before the Lord your God.  Though these nations you are about to drive out listen to fortune-tellers and diviners, the Lord your God has not permitted you to do this. (Deut 18:9-14).

“It’s Old Testament,” you say.  But the Old Testament was to teach people about the nature and character of God, what was acceptable and what wasn’t, and how we should live.  Under grace we are no longer laws judgment, but that doesn’t mean that we wipe out the whole Old Testament as meaningless.  In fact, most of what was taught is reiterated in the New Testament.

Furthermore, the New Testament affirms these truths.  Consider the example of the response of the gospel being preached in Ephesus:

Many of those who believed now came and openly confessed their evil deeds. A number who had practiced sorcery brought their scrolls together and burned them publicly. When they calculated the value of the scrolls, the total came to fifty thousand drachmas. In this way the word of the Lord spread widely and grew in power. (Acts 19:18-20)

“But we don’t take it seriously, it’s just for fun,” you say.  No.  Evil is never casual. There is no such thing as casual sex.  Casual murder.  Casual adultery.  Casual divination.

It may appear casual.  A ouiji board at a party.  A reading of a book or watching of a show.  A rabbit’s foot for good luck.  But these things still defile us.  Worse yet, they create curiosity.  I’ve watched it over and over.  People begin to experiment with these things for “fun.”  And then it begins to change them.

Don’t do it.

Do not turn to mediums or seek out spiritists, for you will be defiled by them. I am the LORD your God. (Leviticus 19:31)

I will set my face against the person who turns to mediums and spiritists to prostitute himself by following them, and I will cut him off from his people. (Leviticus 20:6)

When men tell you to consult mediums and spiritists, who whisper and mutter, should not a people inquire of their God? Why consult the dead on behalf of the living? (Isaiah 8:19)

Do not practice divination or sorcery. (Leviticus 19:26)

Therefore this is what the Sovereign LORD says: “I am against your magic charms with which you ensnare people like birds and I will tear them from your arms; I will set free the people that you ensnare like birds.” (Ezekiel 13:20)

The idols speak deceit, diviners see visions that lie; they tell dreams that are false, they give comfort in vain. Therefore the people wander like sheep oppressed for lack of a shepherd. (Zechariah 10:2)

“So I will come near to you for judgment. I will be quick to testify against sorcerers, adulterers and perjurers, against those who defraud laborers of their wages, who oppress the widows and the fatherless, and deprive aliens of justice, but do not fear me,” says the LORD Almighty. (Malachi 3:5)
